Web Site Essentials

What is important when building a web site?

It is very easy to get a web site posted on the internet these days. The problem is making people remember your web page as something special. It needs to capture the attention of people while getting the point of the page across. There are many web sites on the internet that give tutorials on how to make a proper web page. The site I chose to check for common issues was http://www.netdummy.com/netdummy-31-20031020FiveCommonWebSiteDesignMistakesThatYouMustAvoid.html. This article discusses the top 5 mistakes that are made when designers create a web page.

The first problem with the design is the slow loading times. The bottom line is that not everyone is a techno-geek, meaning that not everyone has newer computers. The more graphics, sounds, and videos that your site has, the longer it's going to take to load. If you want the site to load faster, you need to plan on your site being viewed by lots of people who are still on dial up connections.

The second issue was the navigation of a web page. Too often bad sites will make you go through 5 or 10 links to get to what you are looking for. Many people are using seach engines these days to find what they are looking for. They may not go to your main page to begin with, so it is important for people to know where they are. Pages need to be titled correctly with a link back to the main page.

The last issue was that many web designers get so involved with the actual designing of the site that they lose their focus on what the site was originally about (...whew...). People going to the main page looking for a specific thing are often suprised that they can't find it. It is extremely important to keep on track for the site you are designing. Don't forget your focus, or people will forget your site.

The most important thing to remember when creating and maintaining a web site are the people that visit it. Without people to visit your site, the site serves no purpose. If you can keep these important points in order, then there is no reason your web site cannot become the next big hit!
